The Paniolo Artisan Showcase comes to Pukalani Stables on Sept. 28th and 29th!

To cap off our year-long, Paniolo Talk Story program, the Paniolo Preservation Society invites the community to the 2012 Paniolo Artisan Showcase, which focuses on Hawaiian saddle making as both a livelihood and venue for blending functional work with the highest level of artistic achievement. There’s much more to Hawai’i’s paniolo heritage than superb horsemanship and cattle and land stewardship.  The “tools” of the trade – most notably saddles, bridles and other tack as well as rawhide lariats – are not just essential equipment but also treasured, celebrated art forms that enjoy prestige and acclaim, albeit in ranching circles.

This two-day event is open to the public at no charge and will be held on Friday, September 28th and Saturday, September 29th from 9:30am to 4:00pm at the Paniolo Heritage Center at Pukalani Stables in Waimea. On Saturday the 29th, live Country & Western music starting at 4pm will blend into the evening. At about 5:30 Talk Story sessions will continue focusing on a surprise senior paniolo honoree hosted by Alvin Kawamoto and Fern White. At 6:45 a paniolo supper will be served in Hale Aina while Gretchen Cardoso regales the crowd with her Maui experiences restoring vintage Hawaiian Tree saddles. For those wishing dinner tickets they are available starting Sept. 1 for 15$ at Parker Ranch Store and Kamuela Liquor Store, or for the last minute folks, at the entry gate at the Paniolo Heritage Center at historic Pukalani Stables. See you there!

The 2012 Paniolo Artisan Showcase is supported by a grant from the Richard Smart Fund though the Hawaii Community Foundation and by Paniolo Preservation Society.
