Paniolo Historical Museum & Archives

The Hawaii Council for the Humanities awarded Paniolo Preservation Society (PPS) a $5,000 grant, which was matched by $5,000 in both cash and in-kind services provided by PPS. The period of performance for the grant began September 1, 2005, and ended June 30, 2006. The result of this work was a catalog and annotated index of the textual holdings of PPS – books, journals, legal documents, biographies, and hundreds of other paper documents.

The catalog can be used in the following way:

  • Using the alphabetized list of box contents, look up the folder most likely to contain the item you want.
  • Write down the number of the box containing that folder.
  • Ask the archivist to locate the proper box and give you the folder.
  • Find the item you need inside the folder.
  • Return the item and folder to the archivist when you are through.

The Society’s next objective is to start cataloging the collection of photographs. This will require another grant and is likely to be more expensive. Photographs have to be placed in plastic envelopes and hard-shell boxes to avoid damage, and we have even more photographs than we do paper documents. The cataloging process will be similar in that photographic subjects will be listed alphabetically and associated with a storage container and its identifying number. It would be best to cross-reference them between collections, so that a photo of Humuula Station in the AW Carter collection, for example, would reference photos in the Penhallow and Bergin collections. As a user, you could retrieve all three such photos.

If you would like to contribute to the continuing cataloging of the PPS collections, please consider a donation or join PPS.
